I find the notion of a written ‘artists statement’ – an
outline of procedures, influences and intentions problematic – it
just seems too restricting, besides, I’m not a writer. Much of what
I try to express finds its outlet in painting, photography and dialogues
with the people closest to me in life.
I feel it’s important for me
to nurture a certain freedom and spontaneity (however difficult this tends
to be) in my relationship with my work and indeed the world generally.
Life has a way of confounding our best laid expectations, the need to be
open and adapt to its vicissitudes seems crucial. Perhaps the act of painting
is analogous to this in some way. Creation – destruction-
creation, an ongoing cycle.
