Jo studied sculpture under Ivor Roberts-Jones and Michael Kenney at Goldsmiths
College during the 1960’s. She then attended Reading University for
a postgraduate teaching year.
Jo moved to Bristol with her family in 1973
and since then she has taught art and continued to develop her work. During
the last few years her work has returned to figurative forms, initially
concentrated on skull and head shapes working in clay and experimenting
with surface textures.
Early heads depicted aggressive males, shouting and
angry, while recent work has evolved into quieter and more reflective forms,
some with torsos and a suggestion of clothing or headgear that becomes
in integral part of the whole.
Recently she has produced some larger work
generally of whole figures that are suitable for outdoor locations. Landscape
is an important stimulus; smooth surfaces contrast with textures of rock
and cloth. Here, shape and form are juxtaposed against line and texture.
