We are proud to announce the launch of Barrington Tabb’s biography, “Passion for Paint” by Jonathon Benington, to coincide with an exhibition of new work.

Barrington has been with us at the Cube Gallery for four years. In this time he has built up a solid following of discerning art buyers; his last solo exhibition was a sellout.

He has now come to the attention of a publisher of international standing. As a result the book was commissioned to bring Barrington’s unique views of backstreet Bristol to a wider audience.

To quote from Jonathan Benington’s text :

Barrington Tabb's story has been one of quiet but stubborn perseverance against the odds. Dubbed "Bristol's painter", he came from a working class background and had to teach himself to paint. Thankfully he never lost faith in his natural talent, despite the numerous expressions of disapproval that were meted out to him by friends, family and fellow artists. What has sustained him throughout has been an acute, one might even say ravenous hunger for oil paint. He is intoxicated by the smell, the feel, the colour and the texture of the stuff. Guided by his instincts alone, he handles his chosen expressive medium with all the passion and gutsiness of a Soutine, a Kirchner, a Van Gogh or an Auerbach. Yet his work remains original, for he brings his imagination into play and the end result is never a mere topographical record. His places are felt and experienced, imbued with a sense of the passage of time and the working of memory. By bearing the signs of the artist’s emotional engagement so openly, Tabb's paintings are somehow alive. He is to Bristol what Lowry was to Salford.
